About Us

The String Family journey began in 2016 when the group decided to hit the road to tour fulltime. They toured Australia extensively for three years, performing at festivals, schools, private parties, corporate events, concerts, busking and more. In 2019 The String Family were offered a residency at Paronella Park in Far North QLD, where they performed 520 shows in 6 months to huge critical acclaim.

Take a peek at life hitting the road in The String Family documentary.

Meet The Family

Sarah

Mother of the family, Sarah is a violinist extraordinaire and singer songwriter. She started playing the violin at age 3, performing at the Sydney Opera House for the first time at age 5. Sarah has performed and toured with celebrities such as Kylie Minogue, Ronan Keating, Seal, Susan Boyle and many more and has played for royalty and dignitaries around the world. Sarah performs her own headlining show on international cruiseships.

Joel

Father of the family, Joel plays the cello and looks after many of the technical aspects of performances, recording and technology. Having always been a passionate musician, Joel attended the Sydney Conservatorium of Music High School, after which he went on to specialise in IT. Joel composes electronic ambient and film music which has been released across many popular streaming services.

Heath

Son of the family, Heath started out on the violin at a young age and then switched to cello at age 5 to be like his Dad. He plays cello, guitar and piano and often plays the “viola” part in the String Family arrangements.
Heath has performed on the main stage of the Sydney Opera House in a duet and also in a small chamber ensemble.
In his spare time, Heath enjoys playing Texas Holdem Poker and Computer games.

Ashleigh

Daughter of the family, Ashleigh has been playing the violin since the age of two. She also sings, plays ukulele and performs comedy to the family.

Ashleigh is a qualified preschool teacher and enjoys her time with the kids, particularly enjoying running music and movement classes with her tiny charges. She also works as a Support Worker and performs with other groups from time to time.

Life, Setbacks & Covid

Life is full of ups and downs and we have had more than our fair share of great times. Living life on the road and performing all over Australia, meeting the most amazing people and making lifelong friends. We are the luckiest family.

Right before starting our residency at Paronella Park, Joel sustained a brain injury in an accident which meant that he was not actually able to play cello during those performances. Although he is still recovering, he now has a permanent disability and is continuing to learn to come to terms with his new normal.

Not long after the accident, Covid meant that all of our work was cancelled for a very long time. We have had a hard time gaining the courage to make a comeback, but we are finally ready!
